Start out at Pederü Tavern at 1,545 m; access is via a road from San Vigilio di Marebbe (St. Vigil in Enneberg). Take the broad road, which isn’t too steep, or the footpath, which is rather steep at the beginning however is signposted and labelled, walking up a slope until it levels off. From there, continue partly along the footpath and partly on the road. It’s mostly moderately steep up to the Klein-Fanes trough, where you’ll find two mountain huts: Faneshütte and Lavarellahütte (about 2,040 m; private shelters, staffed in summer); 2 hours from Pederü Tavern. From the Lavarellahütte hut, stay will Trail No. 12, which is a good path, through light stands of trees and later across partly green, partly stony soils and troughs, which are generally only moderately steep, heading southwest and west towards the Kreuzkofelscharte wind gap (2,609 m; various signs). Turn right, onto the marked path along the ridge: it goes slightly uphill and you’ll be heading north until you reach the rise to the summit, which switchbacks easily, if rather steeply, to the actual summit (2,908 m); 3 hours from Fanes. Descent: same as ascent, a total of about 3.5 hours back to Pederü Tavern.
