The highest elevation of the Sarn valley ridge is a classic, typical Merano mountain. The Hirzer rewards hillwalkers with magnificent views of the peaks of the Texel group. A walk to the summit is a mountain experience without any particular difficulties.

Directions

The walk starts at Saltaus from where you take the Hirzer funicular railway to Klammeben. From the railway mountain station walk following signs for "Hirzerhütte" – first gently up a hill then back down to a beautifully situated shelter. From here, follow signs for "Hirzer" which take you to the European Long-Distance Trail (E5) which rises gently at first, later more steeply, to the upper gorge (2683 m). The final part is quite steep and stony but well maintained. Past the gorge, turn left into the Gebirgsjägersteig to the southern flank of the mountain and then zigzag up to the summit. For the descent, follow the same route.

Variante

Those not wanting to risk the ascent from the gorge can instead turn right to reach the Hönigspitz. An alternative descent route is via Höniggrat although this variation is slightly more exposed.
