The Kreuzkofel group towers like a giant curtain wall above the Fanesalm. Of the many peaks of the surrounding mountains the Heiligkreuzkofel, also called Punta Cavallo or L'Cival (Ladin) is the easiest.

Directions

Take the chairlift from St Leonhard (Alta Basia) to Heilig Kreuz (La Crusc), a traditional place of pilgrimage. From the mountain station it is only a few minutes to the beautifully situated pilgrim church "Heilig Kreuz" (2045 m) complete with inn. Follow marking No. 7 at all times, leading first through woodland with mountain pines, then via a rubble track to the rock formations of Kreuzkofel. The track runs across the mountain's entire western slope up to the Kreuzkofelscharte (2612 m), and a number of rocky passages have to be negotiated.. In places, the track is secured with ropes. From the gorge the path leads northward – gently uphill – over the mountain ridge to the summit cross. Descent via the same route.

Variante

A round trip including the Kreuzkofelscharte is also to be recommended. Continue as described up to the gorge, then start the descent in direction "Fanesalm" on track No. 7. At the fork turn right and follow track No. 12B further downhill. Later continue uphill to the Lavarella Saddle (Forcella Medesc) at 2533 m. The descent leads through pinewood to the Viles (a group of farms) of Rudiferia and Canins. Further below join track No. 13 which takes you back to St Leonhard (total time of walk: around 7 hours).
