From Merano or Vernaun first take the Ifinger funicular railway up to Piffinger Köpfl (1900 m; guest houses). From here, on track 3 slightly uphill to Missensteinjoch up to the fork above Waidmannalm, then left on broad track 19A across grassy fields up to Oswaldscharte and left again to Kuhleiten inn (2360 m; 1:30 hrs. so far); now on via the good track 19 westward over the ridge to the foot of the hill, up the marked path to Kleiner Ifinger; 50 m below its summit is the start of the fixed-rope track. Follow this (a well secured path) across the northern flank to a gorge, then briefly downhill on the southern side and finally across some highly exposed sections (partly vertical, but with excellent fixed iron ropes) up to the summit of Grosser Ifinger (2581 m, 1 hr. from Kuhleiten).
For the descent follow route as described (2 hrs.).
Anyone not prepared to risk the final ascent to the Grosser Ifinger summit can concentrate on Kleiner Ifinger instead. From the ridge, go straight ahead across the grassy hill and up to the top. This route is easy and safe.
Mountain experience, surefootedness and a head for heights are essential
By train to Merano, then by bus to Falzeben.
