This trail, which requires a good deal of stamina, leads through idyllic alpine pastures. The name means something like "scissors" (dialect: Schar), which cut through the clouds brought by the wind.

Directions

Coming from Perca (Percha) or Villa Ottone (Uttenheim), head to Rio di Pusteria (Mühlbach), above Gais (1,462 m). Once inside the Valle di Rio Molino (Mühlbachtal) Valley, continue a bit further, until you reach a sign restricting vehicular traffic (parking, about 1,600 m). From there, you’ll walk partly on a footpath and partly on the access road (always following Trail No. 5/2) up a moderate grade through the woods and later passing a couple of alpine farms as you continue into the valley towards the Oberwangeralm and Heiß Alm alpine pastures (2,027 m). Follow Trail No. 5, following signs for Windschar across alpine pastureland, going steeply up to the fork below Grubscharte wind gap, then left (signposted Windschar) onto a well-marked, but sometimes only faint path, which slopes down through the very steep and crumbling edge of the cliff, then to the ridge’s long shoulder (2,900 m), and finally almost flat, west to the foot of the eastern side of the mountain. Then, it’s a steep rock climb along a marked route to the summit (about 1 hour from the crossroads at Grubscharte wind gap); about 4.5 hours from the parking lot. Descent: same route as ascent; about 3 hours.
