A long but utterly rewarding tour for experienced hikers that takes you from Weisslahnbad across the ridge of Mount Sciliar/Schlern to the wast alpine meadows of the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm.

Directions

The trail begins near the parking lot of Lavina Bianca (Weisslahnbad) at the end of Valletta Ciamin (Tschamintal) Valley (1,200 m). A steep trail marked M 2 takes you up to the spectacularly terraced Gola dell'Orsara (Bärenfalle) Trail, which means "bear trap" in English. Before reaching the saddle point up at Tschafatsch Saddle, the trail passes  a cavern that bears resemblance to a prehistoric place of worship. The trail continues to the origin of the gorge of the Sciliar (Schlern) Massif, and takes you up to sunny alpine pastures. After bypassing the little Chapel of Saint Cassian, Trail No. 2 leads directly to Rifugio Bolzano (Schlernhäuser). From here, a short side-trip to Pez (Petz) Peak, the highest point of the Sciliar, is easily doable and recommended. To continue the actual hike, take Trail No. 4 towards Alpe di Tires (Tierser Alp) via Cima di Terrarossa (Roterdspitze) Peak (2,655 m), named after the deep red colour of the soil. At the junction, take the trail leading south to Alpe di Tires. From here, you'll reach a little pass called Forcella Denti di Terrarossa (Rosszahnscharte) at 2,499 metres after a few minutes, which affords amazing views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Across the pass, a steep trail takes you down to the vast alpine meadows of Alpe di Siusi (2,205 m), which you'll  subsequently  cross on Trail No. 2 (the terrain can be partially swampy) towards the Panorama Hotel and Compatsch. In order to get back to the starting point, take the cable car down to Siusi, where there is a bi-hourly bus service to Tires near Lavina Bianca.

Variante

Cima di Terrarossa Peak can be also tackled via a fixed rope route marked Maximiliansteig. This scenic alternative should only be considered by experienced, well-equiped mountaineers that are absoluty free from giddiness. On the northern side of Pez (Petz) Peak, there is an easily accessible, popular viewpoint overlooking the rocky towers of Euringer (2,394 m) and Santner (2,413 m) as well as the villages of Castelrotto (Kastelruth) and Siusi (Seis). Traces of a pre-historic castle have been found nearby.
