In 1786, on his journey through Italy, the German author and poet Goethe was very fascinated by Torbole, the small village at the northern end of the Lake. The first bikers have discovered this place 25 years ago to be an ideal starting point for many tours onto the Monte Altissimo and its surroundings.

Directions

From the Piazza Goethe in (1) Torbole (70 m) you follow the steep side-road (signs for the bike-route), climbing to (2) Nago (220 m). Having reached the centre, you follow the signs “Anello Garda Sarca”/Monte Baldo from the (3) Piazza Pesarol on the Via San Vigilio. Shortly after you will reach a (4) junction with a statue of the Madonna. Keeping the left you will climb steeply in the direction of the Monte Baldo. The asphalted mountain road winds to the (5) Alp Zures (639 m). Following this road uphill, you will reach the first (6) barrier, where you keep right (sign Doss del Mosca). At the second (7) barrier you keep left and follow the n. 6. On this steep and rough forest path you continue to Navene/Malcesine and reach the highest point of this tour in the forest. The decline starts with some hardly driveable steps. Following this challenging single-track you reach the (8) Dosso Spirano (873 m). In the direction of Navene (path n. 6), the path wriggles itself down to the (9) entrance into the forest road. Continuously downhill you will reach a (10) asphalted road that leads to (11) the Gardesana SR249. On this cycle-path directing south you will reach the village of (12) Martora and via the Strada dell’Olio you reach (13) Malcesine (95 m). With the ferry you can make your way back to Torbole via Limone.

The climb follows the famous Monte-Baldo-road for a short track. The narrow mountain road is asphalted, steep and in the summer season very hot. In the southern direction you come across a shaded forest. From the highest point you can reach the real downhill via a bumpy forest road: the exposed single-trail winds itself downhill steeply and is only driveable for those who feel safe doing so. From Malcesine you can reach Torbole easily with the ferry (be aware that not all ferries allow bikes, check the tables). Alternatively, you can make your way back via the Gardesana. This road is usually heavily trafficked and in the long tunnels, lights are essential for your “survival”.
