From the starting point in St. Christina, roll (almost) completely downhill, staying along the Gardena stream until St. Ulrich. Here you reach the lower station of the Seiser Alm cable car, where two bikes plus riders can easily fit into the round gondolas. A few minutes later you're at the highest point of the tour at almost 2000m and can enjoy a magnificent panorama of the Dolomites. With the view including the Schlern, the Rosszähnen, the Plattkofel and the Langkofel, no doubts can be raised at the tour's name.
An easy descent on gravel followed by a climb on asphalt takes you to the first place to stop for a snack, the Gasthaus Icaro. A few kilometres on, now going downhill again, on the left of the road to Saltria you will find the rustic Rauchhütte, which serves tremendous food. The pretty terrace or the lawn are both perfect to relax and enjoy the scenery to the full.
Refreshed and revitalised, you will arrive in Saltria a few minutes later. Next comes the only meaningful climb of the tour on the gravel road towards Monte Pana. However, with the view of the Langkofel and the Plattkofel to cherish, the 170m vertical climb will soon be behind you. From this point on, it's downhill almost all the way.
From Monte Pana to Ciaslat, some beautiful trails bring some technical variety to what is otherwise a very simple tour. Next, a cycle path and the old railway line takes you through Wolkenstein to La Poza, where the tour switches to the other side of the Gardena stream and leads you back to the starting point in St. Christina.
1. Swap the cable car for muscle power: Of couse you can also pedal your way to the reward of the panorama and the meal on the Seiser Alm. At waypoint 12, instead of turning half right downhill, take the half left turn uphill into the Jendertal valley and continue towards Saltria. You will rejoin the tour described above at waypoint 32. To avoid missing the good food at the Rauchhütte, you can turn right here to reach the hut after 1.8km and a 160m vertical climb.
2. Detour via Tirler and Zallinger: At waypoint 31 in Saltria, turn right and ride uphill towards Tirler. Either stop for a snack there, or continue to Zallinger for a break on the unbeatable panorama terrace. From Zallinger head northwards, where you rejoin the tour at waypoint 34.
3. Shorter tour: At waypoint 51 do not continue straight on to Wolkenstein. Instead, turn sharply left downhill towards the Gardena stream. After a few metres you rejoin the tour at waypoint 70 by Haus Paladina.
At the car park belonging to Val Gardena Marketing in St. Christina.
Take the A22, coming via Innsbruck-Brenner if you are travelling from the north, or Verona-Bolzano from the south. The most convenient exit is called Klausen (Chiusa)/Gröden (Val Gardena). From there, follow the clearly signed Höhenstraße (alpine road) to reach St. Ulrich and shortly afterwards St. Christina and Wolkenstein.
