Mountain biking trails in Austria

The province of Salzburg is best known for its bike parks in Saalbach Hinterglemm and Leogang, but offers many other great trails and tours for MTB fans. In the north you can explore the alpine pastures in the Salzkammergut and Tennengebirge on beautiful and technically mostly easy routes. In Tyrol, numerous regions have fully dedicated themselves to mountain biking in recent years and created a great range of trails and MTB routes. From the Kitzbühel Alps to Ischgl in Paznaun, you will find single trails, enduro routes or simple, enjoyable mountain bike tours. There are also wonderful routes for e-bikes at the Achensee. In addition, there are numerous Transalp routes through Tyrol, which you can find by filtering them in the tour search.

In the Danube metropolis of Vienna there is not only an unparalleled cultural offer, but also wonderful routes for bikers and E-MTBers. A huge network of routes criss-crosses the neighbouring Vienna Woods. Long tours into neighbouring Lower Austria are among the great highlights of the Vienna MTB region. If you want to explore the city by bike, MTB in hilly Vienna is also a good choice. Enjoyable, flat routes can also be found in the Lobau National Park or around the Bisamberg mountain.

Besides the hotspot Wienerwald around Baden and Mödling, Lower Austria has a lot more to offer: the bike park at Semmering, one of the oldest in the whole of Austria, almost has cult status. Enjoyable and sporty MTB routes can be found all over the country, an insider tip are those in the Waldviertel. Other fun trails can be found around Göttweig, at Wechsel and Waidhofen.

In Upper Austria, mountain bikers will find trails and MTB routes scattered throughout the country. In the Mühlviertel, forest and woodland trails lead through the hilly countryside, with great views guaranteed. In the south, it's all about the Pyhrn-Priel region and the Kalkalpen National Park through beautiful nature. The epicentre of mountain biking is in the Salzkammergut. Around Bad Goisern there are countless routes to mountain pastures and the most difficult downhill route on the Feuerkogel as well as a bike park in Windischgarsten. And last but not least, in Linz you will find trails close to the city on the Pfenningberg.

In the Styrian Enns Valley, crisp trails await you in the Schladming Bike Park. There are also wonderful tours to mountain lakes and into rustic valleys. The provincial capital Graz also enjoys an excellent reputation among mountain bikers and offers trails and tours of all levels of difficulty. Downhill and enduro pilots also like to visit the Schöckel or the single trails around Bruck an der Mur.

Kärnten stands for sun, lakes and hospitality. No wonder that bikers also like to make pilgrimages to the south of Austria. Among the most popular destinations are Lake Weissensee, the region around Bad Kleinkirchheim and the Petzen, where the longest flow trail in Austria winds its way down the mountain. In addition, in the Hohe Tauern mountain range, hike-metre collectors can add to their account, and around Lake Faak and Lake Ossiach, the trails of „lake bike“ are enticing.

Pure enjoyment is promised by mountain biking in the west of Austria. The Bregenzerwald is the perfect place for extended tours up to alpine pastures and along cool mountain streams. On the alpine pastures you can enjoy the best local products and fantastic views on top. In the Montafon, the MTB routes take you even higher. The Bikepark Brandnertal is the place where enduro and downhill riders meet. A visit to Lech am Arlberg is also worthwhile with bike and E-MTB.

The pleasant climate in Burgendland has long attracted cyclists to the east of Austria. For a long time, Burgenland was mainly known among racing cyclists, but in the meantime word has spread that mountain biking is also very good here. The big highlight are the trails around the Geschriebenenstein, which were opened in 2022 and are suitable for beginners and pros alike. The hills around Lake Neusiedl are more leisurely, where mountain biking on small roads and paths is particularly popular with families and people looking for relaxation.
