Informationen zu South Tyrol Mining Museum - Site Schneeberg

The Schneeberg, the longest-producing silver, lead and zinc mine in the Alpine region, was mined for centuries for its ore. The mining activity has left its mark, with a lasting impact on the entire landscape both above and below ground. The interior of the mountain is criss-crossed by an incredible 150 kilometres of tunnels: educational trails lead to blocked tunnel mouths and past heavy equipment that was left behind following the cessation of mining operations. In the miners’ village of St. Martin, Europe’s highest permanent settlement, a former industrial building houses a permanent exhibition that recounts the history of the mining area. Guided tours above and below ground are also available.
The mine and the refuge on the Schneeberg mountain are only accessible on foot, either in two hours from the Timmelsjochstraße in the Passeier Valley, or in four hours from Maiern in the Ridnaun Valley.
