Franz Tappeiner, born in Lasa in Val Venosta in 1816, moved to Meran after having finished his medical studies in 1848. In addition to his medical profession he was also very active as an anthropologist and botanist. He created the privately financed promenade that bears his name. In 1902 Dr. Franz Tappeiner passed away in his home, the Reichenbach castle in Meran/Maia Alta.
The monument dedicated to him is situated on the Promenade behind the Powder Tower.
The name Dr. Franz Tappeiner is without a doubt linked to the touristic development of the spa town of Meran.
