RODA DI VAEL

There was once an Austrian gentleman who believed in tourism in the Dolomites, when there were still no roads. It was this man, Theodor Christommannos, who at the beginning of the 20th century conceived the idea of the Dolomites road, and was among the first to believe in the Rifugio Roda di Vael, on the south side of the Catinaccio Group. That was a hundred years ago and if you come up from Carezza you’ll find a statue dedicated to Christomannos on the path, and then this refuge with its (beautiful) wooden-shingled exterior. Roberta Silva is the passionate, imaginative warden of this refuge, taking over from her husband (and mountain guide) Bruno Deluca. Open From 28 May to 9 October; before leaving for your hike, always contact the manager to verify the actual opening of the mountain hut.
