Nestling in a lush green mountain meadow in the Carnic Alps in sight of the magnificent Sexten Dolomites, Rifugio Rinfreddo is the ideal destination for those seeking contact with nature, the genuineness of simple things and the colors of life. Fantastic excursions even on horseback or mountain bike, in an environment of incomparable beauty where rhododendron pillows, clumps of anemones and fragrant vanilla orchids merge with the cries of marmots and the animals in the pastures. Behind the Mountain Hut stands Mount Quaternà (2503 m), the ancient volcano and pivotal defense point during the Great War, standing alone to the south of the border ridge dominating the pastures of Val Comelico and Val di Nemes, with exceptional 360° views over the Sexten Dolomites and the Austrian Alps.
We are open from mid June to mid October. In total we have accommodation for 14 people.
Especially popular with guests is our cuisine featuring pasta, bread and homemade cakes and desserts, potato gnocchi, nettle canederli (bread dumplings), sponcio corn polenta, stewed venison, goulash, sausages, speck and local cheese. We have an external terrace with deckchairs, a children’s play area and a covered parking space for bicycles. Adjacent to the mountain hut there is small creamery that produces and sells cheese from malga milk directly to the public in the summer months
How to reach us:
BY CAR: take the municipal road that starts at km 103.8 of S.S. 52 “Carnica”, between Padola and Montecroce Comelico Pass for about 7 km on an almost entirely tarmac road.
ON FOOT: from Ponte della Costa (a village on the municipal road mentioned above): when you get to the car park about 100 metres further ahead take the path to Rinfreddo that cuts through the forest.
