The Prešeren Hut at Stol (Slovene: Prešernova koča na Stolu; 2,174 m or 7,133 ft) is a mountain hut on the southern side of Mt. Stol in the Karawanks (northwestern Slovenia), just below the peak of Little Stol (Mali Stol; 2,198 m or 7,211 ft).

Would you like to feel like the king of the world? Climb up Mt. Stol –  the highest summit of the Karavanke range! On a clear day, from the summit there are views over almost the entire country – to the mysterious Gorjanci forests, the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, Mt. Snežnik, the emerald blue Lake Bled, the Jelovica and Pokljuka plateaus, Ljubljana, and many of Slovenia’s other green jewels of nature.

Though long and steep in places, the trail leading to the hut is not technically difficult, and the amazing views and delicious homemade food available at the hut makes it well worth the effort. Those who pick up firewood and bring it to the hut, will be rewarded with a smile. Don’t forget to taste the delicious homemade food.

Žirovnica lies in the heart of the Upper Carniola Region (Slovene: Gorenjska), surrounded by the Karavanke mountains on one side and by the Julian Alps on the other. Žirovnica is just a stone’s throw away from Slovenia’s most cherished jewel – Bled and the sweetest Slovenian town – Radovljica.

Žirovnica is located 5km from Bled, 22km from Kranjska Gora and 25km from Bohinj. In the immediate vicinity of Žirovnica, there are numerous towns and sights of interest, including the medieval old town of Radovljica (6km), the ALC Lesco Sports Aerodrome (5km), Bled Golf Course, and the Šobec campsite in Lesce. Žirovnica is located 35km from Slovenia’s main airport. The Žirovnica Institute for Tourism and Culture is situated in Matija Čop’s birth house.

Žirovnica is well connected by public transport and easy to get to by car. Choose the option that suits you most!

By train

The railway station Žirovnica is located along the railway line Ljubljana – Jesenice. The railway station is a perfect starting point to easily get by foot to all the main sites of interests.

Žirovnica is 40 km away from the Austrian border (Wurzenpaß) and 46 km away from the Italian border (Fusine Laghi – Rateče). To reach Žirovnica you can take the highway (direction Ljubljana) and then the exit for Bled.

If your starting point is Ljubljana, take the A2 highway northwest from Ljubljana and follow the signs for Kranj or Jesenice. Then take the exit for Bled. The journey time is 40 minutes, but it can extend depending on the season.

'Valvasorjev Dom' hut below Stol. Leave the motorway 'Ljubljana – Jesenice' on exit Bled and at the first roundabout turn towards Žirovica. Drive past Žirovica on the main road and turn right into Moste village after a bridge over Završnica stream. Go left on the first crossroad and then simply follow the signposts for 'Valvasorjev Dom' hut. Ascend for about 4 km on a dirt road. Park near 'Valvasorjev Dom' hut, where it can get pretty crowded on sunny weekends.

A signpost at 'Valvasorjev Dom' hut guides you towards Stol. The signpost says it only takes two and a half hours to the summit - this is only true for the 'super-fast' hikers. You reach 'Žirovniška Planina' alpine meadow quickly on a gently sloping path. The path splits there. I suggest that you go up along the shorter and steeper path, which turns to the left uphill. You will not walk through the woods for long and your sight is constantly drawn to Lake Bled which shimmers behind you. A nicely marked path rises rather steeply until it leads you to a grassy slope. You can already see the summit and come to a 'valley' which separates both summits. Proceed on the right side of the 'valley' to 'Prešernova Koča' hut. The view in all directions is getting more beautiful with every step. Descend a bit from the hut and only a few more steps part you from the top. The Stol summit lies at the Slovene–Austrian border. The slopes gradually descend southwards whereas the north ones are wild and precipitous – as usual in Karavanke mountain chain.Go back again to 'Prešernova Koča' hut and then carry on in the direction of 'Zabreška Planina' alpine meadow. Go towards south-east across quite flat and panoramic grassy slopes. Just above the dwarf pines the path starts to cross to the right. Follow the markings, which lead you to 'Zabreška Planina' meadow in a gentle descent. At the top of the meadow you go down on a dirt road to a very charming pasture hut, which is only 'active' in summer. Proceed on the dirt road to the right, reach 'Žirovska Planina' meadow in 15 minutes and return back to the starting point.Option: If you wish to make the tour longer (for about 2 hours), you can leave your vehicle by an artificial lake in Završnica (where the dirt road towards 'Valvasorjev Dom' hut branches off to the left). Ascend on the dirt road for a few 100 meters and then the markings guide you to the left. A delightful path runs through a forest.
