Directions
The start is located on 1,450 m at a barrier, blocking the entrance into the road that leads from Nago onto the Monte Baldo, named “Strada dei Prati di Nago” (“Road of the meadows of Nago”). The place is very calm, strewn with olive trees and small cottages for the inhabitants of the location near the Lake Garda. After hiking for approx. 45 min you will reach the entrance into the Val del Parol where the path n. 601 starts, leading along the mountains Varagna. Before you turn left to follow the path you can enjoy the view onto the Lake Garda: this is one of the places where it really pays off to halt for a minute and enjoy the slight breeze of the lake. You will come onto a steep path and following this path you will reach a plain after 1 hour that marks the ending of the pan of the Val Parol. One ascending part remains and after the last 45 min you will reach the summit on 2,079 m. This path is very rocky and fragile and only near the summit it gets firmer. Directly below the summit and on the side of the Valley Adige you will find the alpine hut Rifugio Damiano Chiesa, 2,060 m. The descent follows the path of the ascension and can be done within 1 hour and 30 min. The alpine hut on 2,060 m (tel. 0464-867130) is opened between the 20th June and the 20th September and also on the weekends in spring and autumn. The house was built by the SAT in the year 1891 and was devoted to Damiano Chiesa in 1919. In the following years it was undergoing numerous renovations, the last was done with in the year 1995. Now it serves as a comfortable and functioning establishment for the mountaineers. The hut belongs to the Società dei Alpinisti Tridentini e is managed by the Sezione Mori, which sees this location as a social place in the mountains: Trisac games (card game) are held during the summer and the food has the best quality. If you started early enough and the weather is nice enough (in the evening it usually gets foggy) you can see the Lake Garda from Riva to Sirmione. The view allows you to also see the Adamello mountains behind the lake and also the Brenta Dolomites, the Cevedale Mountains the eastern Dolomites, the small Dolomites and the Lessini. This hike can also be done in the winter season, either with snow shoes or as a ski tour. In later spring you can use your hiking shoes. Usually the alpine hut is open on Saturdays and Sundays but you can make sure with a short call.
