Directions
From the fire station garage opposite Gewingeshof Farm in the Inner Ridanna (Ridnauntal) Valley at 1,350 metres, follow signs for the Gewingesalm and Martalm alpine farms. The trail is quite wide, with trail markings (no number), and leads through the woods and two glades, with a moderately steep grade; after about 25 minutes, you’ll reach an intersection with a forest road that leads to the Martalm alpine pasture. Take the footpath, which is sometimes wide and sometimes narrow, through the woods up mountain pastures; at 1,782 metres, you’ll find the hut of the Unteren (Lower) Gewingesalm. Take the marked footpath up through these pastures and onto a path that leads through the forest to the Oberen (Upper) Gewingesalm, which is situated behind a ridge (2,059 m); just over 2 hours from the starting point. Descent: From the Alm, follow signs for the Martalm alpine pastures and follow the trail, which you’ll be able to follow but which has no number, going briefly down a slope covered in dwarf shrub, crossing grassy slopes and moderately to steeply downhill, heading west to Martalm (1,735 m; about 40 minutes from Gewingesalm). Towards the end, avoid the marked footpath that leads down into the valley; instead, take the forest road on the eastern slope of the valley until you reach a sharp bend to the left. Take the path through the forest that branches off to the right, traversing the forested slopes to a junction with the trail on which you ascended: take this trail down to the starting point; a good hour from Martalm.
