Directions
The Alta Via di Merano (Meraner Höhenweg) high trail assumes its first truly Alpine features starting from the Hochganghaus refuge. The previously rather easy trail now transforms into a more difficult route, called the AVS Jugendweg Trail, and passes the Malga di Tabland (Tablander Alm) alpine pasture on its way down to Nasereit at 1,523 m. You’ll cross Zielbach Stream, which originates in the heart of the Gruppo di Tessa (Texelgruppe) Mountains, and then will continue to Giggelberg Mountain Inn at 1,565 m. The Monte Sole (Sonnenberg) Mountains begin here: this zone has its own distinctive climate and vegetation, characterised by barren mountain farmlands. From Giggelberg, you’ll have infinite views that encompass the whole of the Merano Valley Basin, all the way into Val Venosta (Vinschgau) Valley and the glaciers of the Ortler Massif.
