Hikes in Sesto

Sesto is located in the far east of South Tyrol and borders on Austria. The municipal area includes almost the entire Sextental valley as well as other small side valleys and associated districts such as Sexten Moos. As it could not be otherwise in this region, the village is surrounded by mountains and thus offers ample opportunity for hikes that take you high up or idyllically along the slopes. The Dolomites, as if made for hiking, are undoubtedly characteristic of the region.

The Sesto Dolomites border the municipal area in the south, making it the ideal starting point for many hiking tours. In addition, there are via ferratas, which have their very own charm in view of the majestic rock formations that can only be found in the Dolomites.

Sesto is a worthwhile destination in summer as well as in winter. While hiking trails and via ferratas attract visitors in summer, skiing and tobogganing slopes draw many winter sports enthusiasts to the region in the cold season. The Holzriese downhill run is particularly well known. With a gradient of 71%, it is the steepest prepared ski slope in Italy and therefore only something for professionals.

The special thing about the Dolomites are the many rock formations, some of which appear bizarre, which rise mightily towards the sky and are eye-catchers on many hikes. The Three Peaks are particularly imposing and are a kind of landmark for the village. The highest of the three rocks is an impressive 2999 metres high.

Many visitors are satisfied with the sight of this mountain range, which is particularly impressive at sunset. Those who like climbing can reach the very top via one of the numerous via ferratas with various degrees of difficulty.

The "Sesto Sundial" is formed by five mountain peaks in the Sesto Dolomites, each of which represents a time between 9 pm and 1 pm. Depending on which of these peaks the sun is currently above, the corresponding time can be read. However, this only works if you are north of the peaks and ideally exactly in the centre of the municipality of Sesto. By the way, the Sesto Croda Rossa forms the tenth peak, which is a worthwhile destination for hiking tours even without its function as an hour dial for a sundial.

Numerous great places to stop for refreshments such as the Talschlusshütte in the Fischleintal valley, the Büllelejochhütte near the Oberbachernspitze, the Zsigmondyhütte at an altitude of 2224 metres or the Alpe Nemes in the dreamlike nature of the Dolomites are waiting for you.
