Hikes around Schenna

Schenna offers numerous hiking trails between mountain and valley, up to the peaks of Hirzer and Ifinger. The trails around Schenna can be reached on foot and by bike, as well as with two cable cars and chairlifts. If you want to get by without a cable car, you can hike to the mountain village of Videgg at 1,536 meters, for example. The route requires a good level of fitness and the right footwear to safely explore the majestic mountains of South Tyrol. Easy hiking tours like the Wiesenweg lead along numerous cultural sites and offer dreamlike views over the imposing mountains with their high peaks.

Schenna: Hikes in the Hirzer area

The wide alpine pasture area below the Hirzer peak is an insider tip for families. Through meadows, over alpine rose slopes and along pastures, scenic hiking trails lead from hut to hut. Cozy places to stop for refreshments, such as the rustic Hirzerhütte, invite you to take a break and enjoy culinary delicacies. The small groups of houses of Videgg, Oberkirn and Prenn inspire the visitor in their rural architectural style with flowers and gardens. Thanks to the two cable cars Hirzer (valley station in Saltaus) and Verdins, the high-altitude hiking trails can be reached easily.

Easy walks for families in Schenna and its surroundings

The scenic farms of Schennaberg are overlooked by the peaks of the Ifinger peak. A network of well-marked hiking trails stretches from the Streitweider Alm to Gsteier, from the idyllically situated Ifingerhütte to the Schenner Waalweg. In between, cozy huts and farm taverns invite you to enjoy Tyrolean dumplings or apple strudel. The many scattered settlements on the Schennaberg give an idea of the hard work on the farm and in the fields, and again and again offer a wide view of the Merano countryside.

A walk through the village of Schenna itself is also worthwhile. At the bus stops there are up-to-date signposts and directions for orientation. These provide information on how far away the next route is and which sights and resting places can be found along the hiking trails.

Leisurely hikes on the beautiful meadow path are particularly suitable for getting to know the surroundings of Schenna. The starting point for the hike to St. Georgen is the village center of Schenna. At the mini golf course the road leads up to the "Rodelstein", from where a slightly ascending path branches off to St. Georgen. When you reach this point, continue in the direction of Waalweg. Here you take the left fork, which leads through meadows and fields to Krebishof and Lothhof. Afterwards you walk back to Schenna. The route is about 3.8 kilometers long, the walking time is one hour.

Hiking to Merano

For lovers of culture, hiking tours to the nearby spa town of Merano are recommended, which can easily be reached on foot via the Maiser Waalweg or the panoramic Mitterplattweg promenade. In Merano there are numerous sights that you should definitely see:
  • Botanical Gardens of Merano with 80 different garden worlds and two viewing platforms.
  • The Wandelhalle, on the walls of which you can admire works of art from the Belle Epoque period
  • The Powder Tower on a mighty rock above the parish church
  • The medieval Steinach quarter with the town gate from the 13th century
  • The Merano City Museum with a large collection of exhibits from different eras
  • Trauttmansdorff Castle, where Empress Sissi once resided

Merano 2000

On the wide high plateau of Merano 2000, which is exposed to the sun from early morning until late at night, every hiker will find their way. Comfortable and family-friendly, easy to moderately difficult footpaths lead from hut to hut, from alpine pasture to alpine pasture or on the high-altitude trail to beautiful views and panoramas. The short but challenging via ferrata to the Ifinger Spitze is rewarded with views of the Dolomite mountains and Ortler glacier and, way down below, Merano and Schenna.

You can reach this hiker's paradise both from Schenna with the large Merano 2000 gondola and from Hafling with the cable car.
