These eleven kilometre circular route runs from Rifugio Passo Sella (Sellajochhaus), first with the cable car up to Forcella del Sassolungo (Langkofelscharte) wind gap; from there, the hike takes you down to Rifugio Vicenza (Langkofelhütte).

Directions

Ascent: From the hotel-scale Rifugio Passo Sella (Sellajochhaus) mountain hut on the road that leads from Val Gardena (Gröden) Valley to the Passo Sella (Sella Joch) Pass (2,179 m), take the gondola up to the Langkofelscharte wind gap, which cuts between Fünffingerspitze Peak and Sassolungo (Langkofel) Mountain, and on to Toni Demetz Hütte (2,679 m; operating in summer; walking on Trail 525: 1 hour. Descent: From the wind gap, head north on Trail No. 525 across the (often snow-covered) scree of the Langkofelkar cirque. It’s steep for about 40 minutes, down to the Rifugio Vicenza (Langkofelhütte) mountain hut, which is set magnificently into the mountains (2,252 m; operating in summer). Then continue along the access road, down to where Trail No.527 (2,014 m) forks to the left; 1 hour from Langkofelscharte wind gap. High Trail: from this junction, descend on Trail No. 527, first via the cirque then along the edge of the forest, at first almost flat and then rising slightly, under the mighty northern face of Sasso Piatto (Plattkofel) Mountain, to the meadow-covered ridge of Piz da Uridl Peak (2,109 m). Turn left, along the slopes, partially covered in Swiss stone pines, below the broad, southwest sloping area of Sasso Piatto Mountain, to the Rifugio Sassopiatto (Plattkofelhütte) mountain hut at the Giogo di Fassa (Fassajoch) notch (2,256 m; operating in summer; almost 2 hours from the Rifugio Vicenza mountain hut). From the hut, take the Friedrich August Trail (mark 4/594) east to an alpine pasture and then through steep grassy slopes, crisscrossed by several graben, first to the private Sandro Pertini Hütte (2,300 m), then on to the Friedrich August Hütte (which is also private, 2,298 m) and a broad, meadow-covered saddle called Forcella di Rodella (2,308 m). From there, it’s a easy descent along a meadow trail to Piz Grohman Restaurant then past Rifugio Valentini to the Dolomite Road, and back to the Rifugio Passo Sella mountain hut in a few minutes.
