Ascent: From the hotel-scale Rifugio Passo Sella (Sellajochhaus) mountain hut, along the road that leads from Val Gardena (Gröden) Valley to the Passo Sella (Sella Joch) Pass (2,179 m), take the cable car up (walking on Trail 525: 1 hour) to the Langkofelscharte wind gap, which cuts between Fünffingerspitze Peak and Sassolungo (Langkofel) Mountain, and on to Toni Demetz Hütte (2,679 m; operating in summer). Descent: From the wind gap, head north on Trail No. 525 across the scree of the Langkofelkar cirque, which is often covered with snow. It’s steep for about 40 minutes down to the Rifugio Vicenza Langkofelhütte mountain hut, which is set magnificently into the mountains (2,252 m; operating in summer). Keep right, following a good trail (signposted Mont de Soura) with a few switchbacks, down out of the Langkofelkar cirque towards the foot of the northwest faces of Sassolungo (Langkofel) Mountain (2,085 m); 1 hour from Langkofelscharte wind gap. High trail: From the foot of the northwest face of Sassolungo Mountain, continue along the flat Trail No. 526 (also called the F.R. Stradal Weg Trail), crossing steep grassy slopes towards the east then a final, short uphill to Ciaulongsattel Saddle (2,123 m). From there, continue on Trail No. 526, which descends slightly, along the northern edge of the woods then through a small meadow valley, ascending moderately, to the Rifugio Emilio Comici mountain hut (2,155 m; operating in summer). Continue south on Trail No. 526, first through a sparse stand of Swiss stone pine trees, then through meadows (1976 landslide), nearly flat, under the eastern face of the grey Sassolungo Mountain, through the Steinernen Stadt (lit: Stone City), and back to Rifugio Passo Sella; just under 3 hours from the beginning of the high trail.
