The Antholz Valley

The Antholz Valley is located in the very east of South Tyrol and already borders on Austria. As a side valley of the Pustertal, it lies entirely within the municipal territory of Rasen-Antholz. The approximately 2900 inhabitants live in the six village settlements, called fractions, as well as on individual farms and hamlets between Rasen and Antholz Obertal. In addition to the valley itself, the adjacent Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park is particularly recommended for first-class hikes. Characterized by striking peaks of granite rock and wide mountain meadows, numerous hiking trails invite you to discover this impressive region. Fresh mountain spring water, whistling marmots and wonderfully fragrant alpine herbs make hiking trips through nature an experience for all the senses.

Hikes in Antholz

For those who want to take it easy at the beginning in the Antholz Valley, a hike around the idyllic Antholz Lake in Obertal is recommended. The only 3.4 km long loop can be easily hiked in just under 1.5 hours and overcomes 80 meters in altitude. The route leads along wide hiking trails and is therefore also ideally suited for families with strollers.

If the lake alone is not enough and you are not deterred by several hundred meters of ascent, we recommend the hike to the upper lake at the Staller Sattel. The path leads from the Antholz lake first a good 200 meters in altitude up to the Steinzgeralm. From the alpine pasture it continues steeply uphill to a beautiful vantage point at 2277 m, from where you have a great view of Lake Antholz and Obersee. Now follows the descent to Staller Sattel and to Obersee. The length of the "2 Lakes View Hike" is a good 13 km, for which about 6 hours of walking time should be calculated.

Without many meters of altitude, you can walk to the Staller Alm. The hike starts directly at the top of the mountain pass at Staller Sattel. In 45 minutes you reach the alpine pasture, where a cozy refreshment awaits the whole family. You return to the starting point along the same path.

Medium difficulty hikes in the Antholz Valley

One of the most interesting hikes in the Antholz Valley is the circular route to the Kumpflalm and the Klammbach waterfall, which starts directly in the village of Antholz Mittertal. As a reward for the ascent, there is a cozy stop here in the rustic alpine hut, then the beautiful Mittertaler Höhenweg leads moderately steep to the thundering waterfall - a natural spectacle worth seeing.

On the other side of the valley you will find the steep path to the unstaffed Agstalm. The distance is only 5.2 km, but the ascent is quite a challenge. 649 meters of altitude have to be mastered until the Agstalm is reached at 1868 m above sea level.

Flat walks in the valley for families

If there is still snow when you arrive or you are simply looking for a change from skiing during your vacation, the winter hike through the Rasen biotope is recommended. The hiking trails are mostly flat and over the 9.1 km long route there are only 42 meters of altitude difference. The tour is nice to get to know the lower Antholz Valley. The circular hiking trail can be started from Antholz Niedertal as well as Antholz Mittertal. On the valley floor, there are many other family-friendly circular hiking trails in all parts of Antholz without large differences in altitude. Nice examples are the Müllerkoflweg, the Nösslerweg or the Mittertaler Rundweg.

The 11 summit tour high above the Antholz Valley

For sporty hikers, the short stretches on the valley floor can only serve as a warm-up. High up is the 11-summit tour. Over 32.5 km, the route covers an impressive 3139 meters in altitude. The highest point is the Rotwand at 2814 m. The eleven peaks add up and make the twelve-hour hike a real challenge. Surefootedness and a very good physical condition are of course required on hiking routes like these. In return, you will be rewarded with magnificent panoramic views while hiking along lonely mountain paths. On the ridge hike high above the Antholz and Gsies valleys you can look down on the Rieserferner group, the South Tyrolean Dolomites and far over the Austrian Eastern Alps - an unforgettable experience.
