Directions
Ascent: From Luson (Lüsen) in the valley of the same name at 981 m; approach is on the motorway from Bressanone (Brixen). Follow Trail No.14 northwest, partially along the old footpath and partially on the rural road, up to the Lüsen-Berg farms and to Tulper Inn (1625 m). Cross the forested slopes, following signage for No. 14, past Wieserhof Farm, towards the west, and continue over to Gschlorerhof Farm. Stay on Trail No. 14 through forest and mountain meadows, with a moderate grade, up to the Ronerhütte mountain hut on the Roneralm alpine pastures (1,832; tavern), where the high-altitude hike begins; 3 hours from Luson. High Trail: from Roneralm alpine pastures, first briefly take the service road, then shortly through the woods, followed by a long, gorgeous hike across expansive pastureland, heading east towards the Starkenfeldhütte mountain hut (1,936 m; operating in summer; 1 hour from Roneralm; not far away, Rastnerhütte mountain hut is also in operation). Soon afterwards, make a right, and continue hiking, nearly flat, across the slopes to Steineralm alpine pastures, and then on to the Kaltbrunnalm alpine pastures, and finally to the Rifugio Prato Croce (Kreuzwiesenhütte) mountain hut (1,925 m; operating in summer), where the high-altitude hike ends; 2.5 hours from Roneralm. Descent: from Rifugio Prato Croce, go along the trail to Blitzbach Stream, across the Gampillwiesen meadows, and through a beautiful forest on Trail No. 2, down to the hamlet of Flitt (1,337 m; lodging), partly on the road, partly on a shortcut footpath, and back down to Luson; 1.5 hours from Rifugio Prato Croce.
