Corno del Renon (Rittner Horn) offers not only spectacular views but also a 12-kilometre, fascinating hike through varied alpine pastureland, set against the jagged blue backdrop of the Dolomites.

Directions

Ascent: First take the bus from Bolzano (Bozen) via Klobenstein to Pemmern on Renon (Ritten) at 1,538 m. From there, you can take the cabin lift (walking 1.5 hours) up to Schwarzseespitze Peak (2,070 m; restaurant). From there, take the wide path that leads to Unterhornhaus (2,044 m; restaurant) and it’s a moderately steep grade across grassy slopes up to the Rifugio Corno del Renon (Rittner-Horn-Haus) mountain hut, at the top of Corno del Renon (2,260 metres, mountain hut open in summer); a good hour from Schwarzseespitze Peak; lodging available. High Trail: From the Rifugio Corno del Renon mountain hut, take Trail 1/3/7 northwest, down a bit to meadows and then onto a wide path across the flat alpine pastureland of the knoll of Sattelberg Mountain (2,160 m) to the broad Gasteiger Saddle at 2,057 m; you can opt to turn right, down to Villandro (Villanders) on Trail No. 7. From there, head straight onto a trail through meadows (No. 1) over marshy terrain and then briefly across a flat ridge, back down to the marshy Moos Pastures (intersection with Trail No. 6, which ascends to Am Toten Chapel; 15 min). Trail No. 1 continues briefly through very swampy meadows to the next junction (on the right, a little further: Stöfflhütte mountain hut, 2,057 m, open in summer; 10 min). Our alpine Trail No. 1 leads now across the broad ridge of Jocherer Alm, partly flat, partly slightly uphill to a small ridge shoulder. Then there is a final short descent and opposing ascent up a sloping trough, heading up to the Santa Croce di Lazfons (Latzfonser Kreuz) summit cross, pilgrimage church and mountain refuge (2,300 m; operating in summer); 4.5 hours from Corno del Renon. Descent: From Santa Croce di Lazfons, follow Trail No. 17 east, about 40 minutes, down to the Rifugio Chiusa (Klausener Hütte) mountain hut (1,919 m; operating in summer) and then along Trail No. 2, down through mountain meadows and forests and past farms; 1.5 hours to Latzfons (1,160 m); just under 2.5 hours from Santa Croce di Lazfons. From Latzfons, take the bus (if running) or other public transportation to Feldthurns and on to Bressanone (Brixen) or Chiusa (Klausen).
