Directions

Ascent: From Ortisei (St. Ulrich) in Val Gardena (Gröden) Valley (1,236 m), first take the Rasciesa chairlift (Raschötz Sessellift) up the north side to Außerraschötz (restaurant at summit station; 2,095 m; 2.5 hours on Trail No 7). From there, follow a wide path west, up a moderate grade, to the Rifugio Rasciesa (Raschötzhütte) mountain hut (2,165 m; recently reopened) and a short detour to Heiligkreuz (Holy Cross), a pilgrimage chapel at the western edge of the plateau (2199 m, extraordinary view); 30 min. from the summit station of the chair lift.  High Trail: from Heiligkreuz Chapel, go back to Rifugio Rasciesa and briefly onto the access road, as far as a fork. Make a left onto the high trail (marked 35), which is basically flat as it crosses east to the Saltnerhütte mountain hut on the Malga Rasciesa (Raschötzer Alm) alpine pastures (bar; 2,111 m). Follow the broad trail (staying with signs for No. 35) in a short ascent through meadows to a notch with wayside shrine and bench. From there, it’s an easy descent down to a fork under the Flitzer Scharte wind gap (here, there is a water trough with good water). Then, flat or just ascending slightly, cross the eastern Rasciesa pastureland north to Broglessattel Saddle (2,119 m). Go along the broad path, with a moderate grade, that leads down the meadow-covered slopes to the Brogleshütte mountain hut (2,045 m; operating in summer); 2.5 hours from Heiligkreuz Chapel. Descent: From Brogleshütte, head back up to the northern Broglessattel Saddle along Trail No. 3, under the striped Secedawand face, and through the beautiful Val d'Anna (Annatal) Valley (staying with signage for No. 3) mostly near a creek, moderately steep, down through woods and along a grassy forest aisle, down to the intersection with the Troi Paian Trail (ancient pagan path), and continuing on the partially paved Trail No. 3 through the forest to the Furn Farms. From there, you’re quickly back on a narrow asphalt road (continue following signs for No. 3) through meadows, down to the Gran Pünt (large bridge) and between farms and houses to Ortisei; just under 2 hours from Brogleshütte.
