From Santa Gertrude (St. Gertraud) in Solda (Sulden) at 1,840 m, first take the chairlift to Langenstein, where you’ll find the K2 mountain tavern (2,330 m). From there, follow Trail No. 3 on foot (this is the Morosini Höhenweg Trail) first across glacial moraine and then crossing partly grassy, partly rocky cliffs (lightly exposed spots are equipped with fixed ropes and wooden bridges) in a beautiful and mostly only slightly uphill hike to Hintergrathüttte mountain hut (2,661 m; staffed mountain refuge; about 1.5 hours from Langenstein). To descend from the hut, follow Trail No. 2 south downhill as far as the crossroads, where you have two options: 1) turn right and walk over to the intermediate station of the Solda cable car (2,172 m) and take it or the wide access road (45 minutes) down into the valley or 2) turn left and climb down into the valley head along a very steep and rocky route, which is marked and partially secured with short metal stairs. From there, the trail is beautiful and mostly flat out to another road fork; go straight onto the Kulturweg (culture trail) through the woods and beyond the starting point; a good 2 hours from Hintergrathütte.
