In the belly of one of the most majestic, wild and deep canyons in Europe

From the car park, head towards the Riu Frumeneddu, the river that flows nearby in the village of Sa Barva. You can cross it by a bridge over splendid pools of emerald water. A little further on is a junction, where you will turn left southwards, onto a clear, dirt road characterised by gentle ups and downs. The road is halfway between the river banks and the high calcareous bastions of Monte Oddeu on the right – an alpine destination renowned for the quality of its rock. Towards the river, small paths lead to pools of water ideal for a refreshing bath on hot days. You will cross a wooden gate at the top of a hill. Then the dirt road becomes a path constantly drawing closer of or away from the river. In the coolest places, you will find non-perennial springs in quick succession. As you proceed, you can see the large gap where the Gorropu canyon is, which clearly cuts off the long, high limestone wall. You will reach the entrance to large pools of water and a forest of oleanders on the river banks. Here, from April to November, there is a fee to pay. This visit takes place in the middle stretch of the very high and imposing gorge – especially under the projecting Punta Cucuttos overlooking the viewer for over 500 m., leaving the bottom of the gorge in perpetual darkness. This offers a justification to ancient legends surrounding this place, including the one that from here one can see the stars even in daylight. Once the visit is completed, you can go back to the car along the route you followed on the outward journey.

Public transportation

Public bus service to Dorgali, then necessarily by car to Oddoene

From the village of Dorgali, head southwards on the SS125, following the signs for Baunei. After about a kilometer you will cross a tunnel on the left that leads to Cala Gonone. A few bends later, you will find a paved junction on the right, with signs for Tiscali, Rifugio Gorroppu. Take it, and after a few downhill hairpin bends you will come to a fork and turn left (signs for Tiscali and Gorroppu gorge). Leave the fork on the left, leading to the Gorroppu refuge, and start a steep descent. Always follow the main road, heading on along the valley floor of Oddoene. Continue for about 12 km, until the road becomes paved, and you will reach a clearing signposted by parking signs on the right.
