Who gets stuck in the traffic between Riva and Arco and who has the possibility to look at the modern, yet monotone, architecture of the industry and factory buildings will hardly believe this: just some kilometres from this functional buildings and the hectitc bustle you can find a completely different world with picturesque, winding villages, forts and on top of it an idyllic mountain lake. The latter is responsible for a well-liked sight near Riva: the Varone-Waterfall. Close to this impressive place you can also visit a historic factory-area in Varone, the great paper mill. It remembers the fact that the creation of paper has a very long tradition in this area around the Lake Garda. Canale, a small village on the path to Giudicarie, appears to have been taken out of its time as it was left by its inhabitants after the Second World War and then re-discovered and gradually re-build in the following years, initiated by Giacomo Vittone, name-giver of the Casa degli Artisti in the village (www.casartisti.it). Nowadays, life has come back to this village and the art-house offers different exhibitions and seminars on the regular. Art has taken over the daily routines, frescoes decorate many of the houses and shops offer artisan craftworks (no kitsch).

Directions

The hike starts to lead into the mountain and not uphill. After having made a small donation your passage is guaranteed and you can proceed to the possibly wet entertainment. After the visit of the almost 100 meter tall Varone-waterfall you can start to walk towards the Lake Tenno. Initially on a beautiful path next to the road, then shortly on the road and then to the left as you see the indication for the Sentiero di Gola. Between the olive trees you walk uphill on the cobbled path. The village Cologna (258 m) is to your right and the path leads into the small and forested gorge near Tenno. To the left you can see the Castello di Tenno. The non-accessible complex is surrounded by the houses of the winding Frapporta, having its medieval fortification still be intact to some extent (Frapporta means “between the doors”). Near the castle you cross the main road and rise through the old city centre to Tenno (409 m). Some steps behind the village’s centre-square you can find a red-white indication for a ravine to the right. Accompanied by bramble-bushes you walk uphill to the village of Calvola (626 m). Turn left onto the asphalt and after 200 m you take the upper road, walk to the medieval Canale (600 m) with its beautiful Casa degli Artisti (museum, exhibitions). You leave the picturesque and winding village through a door to the north and follow the road that, keeping the same height, cuts the slope on the back of the village. The Lake Tenno (570 m) cannot be seen yet as it lies, without any visible drain, behind a latch in the terrain. At its southern shore you can see a beautifully made path the rises, partly over steps to the road that leads to Ballino (bus stop and restaurants).
