Approach from Appiano (Eppan) or Caldaro (Kaltern) along the winding road through the Mendel Pass (1,363 m), then on a narrow road (signage reads Roen) through the forest, south for 1.5 km, until you reach the valley station of the triple chairlift (about 1,370 m; parking). Take the lift up to the summit station (around 1,600 m), then head towards the nearby Halbweg tavern and lodge (1,594 m) on Trail No. 500, through forest and a stand of larches, with a moderate grade at the beginning then partially flat and easy, on and off, to Romeno or Roèn Alm alpine pasture (1,773 m; bar; a good hour from Halbweg Tavern); left along a good trail for 15 minutes through the forest and a little further to the Überetscherhütte mountain hut (1,775 m; open in summer); almost 1.5 hours from Halbweg tavern. Via ferrata to Roèngipfel Summit: from the hut, follow signs that read "Klettersteig" through the forest for a bit then continue along the via ferrata climbing route, which is well marked and very exposed in places but well secured in the tricky parts, over the Dolomitic rocks up to the gently sloping north ridge of the mountain and then south along a problem-free hike to the peak (2,116 m; about an hour from the hut). Descent: From the summit, head north/northwest, with an intermediate grade, along a trail that gets increasingly better and is signposted, across open terrain, through a larch stand and forest, down to Romeno Alm and the access route back to the starting point; using the lift, about 1.5 hours.
The via ferrata is only for vertigo-free and surefooted hikers; anyone who is not an experienced and skilled hiker should choose the path of descent we describe for their ascent.
