Classical hike through alpine huts along the crest of the valley Etschtal. The tour can be shortened by choosing the way back from the Romeno hut (entire hike: 3-4 hours).

The entire hike follows the SAT n. 500 “Sentiero Italia” along the crest on the side of the valley Etschtal. From the Mendelpass above the cable car you start between the huts (path n. 500) until you reach the alpine hut Genzianella. From this point you gain some height and you walk underneath the ropes of the cable car to reach the hut Mezzavia. You continue to climb between the forest and the clearings and eventually you will find yourself on a wide open meadow where you can also see the Romeno alp. Here you start to climb the entire northern side of the mountain and eventually you will reach the peak of the Roen (360° panorama of the Dolomites). From this peak you keep walking south for another bit (always along n. 500) and you turn onto path n. 528 which descents in the direction of the meadows of the Smarano alp. You turn onto the path n. 528a and only little above the Romeno alp you can get back onto path n. 500. Here you start to walk back to the Mendelpass along the same path that you have already walked on.

From the Romeno alp you can reach the alpine hut Oltradige. Here you can continue your hike to the peak via an easy via ferrata (equipment is necessary: climbing gear and carabiner). During the summer season you can take the cable car to the hut Mezzavia to diminish the difference in altitude.
