The denomination “Path of the Kalendae” remembers of the old events of the Calendimaggio, heathen holidays who were converted into Christian traditions and processions in May, basically events that have survived in many different countries where the people walk to large crosses outside their villages in order to bless the fields and the inhabitants. A religious feeling completely different to the disgusting trails witches had to face that were common in the 17th century throughout all of Europe as well as here in the Trentino region. The count Lodron of Nogaredo had his seat in the same palace where the inquisition’s court condemned four local women to be burned alive. Nogaredo is now known for its wine and the agriculture and the palace Lodron (today Relais Palazzo Lodron, tel: 0464 413152) functions as an eye-catcher. The aristocratic residence has a large courtyard and large areas with vines, surrounded by walls. One corner has a stone fountain that shows the crest of Lodron: a lion.

From the distillery Marzadro (sign “Sentiero delle Kalendae“) you can follow the plastered road, flanked by dry walls. To the left you will then cross the fertile vineyards to Nogaredo (217 m), the centre of wine and agriculture. You walk uphill through the village and you can see the Palazzo Cadelpergher (townhall) and the large fountain behind it. You get past the church San Leonardo built in the 18th century and the impressive Castel Noarna that watches over it. You turn onto the SP20 (by turning right onto the “Sentiero dei sassi incantati”) and then take the first left to walk through the vine yards and to get to the Dos dele Strie (248 m, 1h) and to Brancolino. This village’s name remembers of the trails against the women who were accused to by closely connected to the devil himself. In Brancolino (192 m) you can admire the church of Virgin Mary, a true jewel of baroque art even though it was already mentioned in the year 1240. It used to be part of the monastery of the Frati Minori (the cloister is still intact) and inside the church you can find many frescos, attributed to the Brescian artist Antonio Sorrisi. The monastery was supressed by the Napoleonian laws in 1810 and for some years it was used as a state drying facility for tobacco leaves in order to bring them into the nearby tobacco factory of Sacco (opened in 1854, shut down in 2008, today Progetto Manifattura Domani). The path ends with a walk along the main road and over the Via delle Lavine, through the village Pille, past the sports area and back to Cantine Marzadro.

Along the SP20 you can get further to Vallagarina and the Castel Noarna (370 m, 20 min), also known as Castelnuovo Lagarino. Although it may look shabby from the outside, it offers great frescos of the 16th century. It was owned by the count of Lodron (15th century) who had taken it from the family Castelbarco and reconstructed it to be an elegant residence.
