Ascent: From Riva di Tures (Rein in Taufers) or the valley floor below at 1,536 m, using the road from Campo Tures (Sand in Taufers) to approach, follow Trail No. 1 on the orographic left side of the valley: the trail leads to a number of huts (Hüttenweg), first through steep forests and later less steep, up to the lower Terner Alm alpine pastures (1874 m), on to the Eppacher Alm alpine pastures (2,041 m), and finally up to a large mountain hut, Rifugio Roma (Kasseler Hütte), also known as Hochgallhütte (2,276 m; operating in summer); 2.5 hours from Riva di Tures. High Trail: from Rifugio Roma, follow Trail No. 8 marked with signs for the Arthur-Hartdegen-Weg Trail, under the north face of Hochgall Mountain, nearly flat, over extensive moraine, we pass through several streams of melted glacier water, which appear in the latter part of the day and then around the rocky faces of the massive Mount Riesernock (safety tethers in exposed places) to the fork across from the Ursprungalm alpine pasture (2,350 m). We stay to the left, crossing Ursprungbach Creek, and soon reach the mountain hut of the Ursprungalm pastures (2,396 m; 2 hours from Rifugio Roma). From the Alm, follow Trail No. 8, which is flat throughout and presents some watercourses to be crossed, under the Bärenluegwand face through to Brunneralm alpine pastures (2322 m) and then across the alpine slopes, an easy descent, beyond the Oberen (lit: upper) Kofleralm pastures (2,192 m); 3.5 hours from Rifugio Roma. Descent: from Oberen Kofleralm, follow Trail No. 8 through beautiful Swiss stone pine forest, down a moderately steep grade to the Unteren (lit: lower) Kofleralm (2,034 m). Continue along Trail No. 8 through forest, down to Ebnerhof Farm and walk along the farm’s access road. Soon, you’ll cross Knuttenbach Stream and then go onto the little road running through Knuttental Valley, out to Riva di Tures; 1.5 hours from Oberen Kofleralm.
