Walking among Scots pinesThe term "trentino grave" stands for "ghiaione", i.e. accumulation of stones. The countryside biotope known as "Le Grave" comprises two distinct areas of about 30 hectares: Le Lore, a wet environment with sedges, marsh orchids and water lilies covering a small pond, and Le Grave, a dry area with the elevation covered with porphyry gravel, the result of the extraction of galena argentifera 75 that affected the Monte Calisio area in the Middle Ages. Around the middle of the twentieth century, baryte, a barium sulphate used in various fields (medicine, chemistry, etc.), was extracted from the same tunnels. Today this plateau, enhanced by the Argentario Ecomuseum, has a very evocative semi-desert appearance. It is stained with plants typical of arid places such as globularia, juniper and pine, which grow slowly and in a stunted form because of the soil. The fauna also differs in the two ecosystems, but shows greater diversity due to the proximity between wet and other dry parts.
