Sometimes appearing as thin needles, sometimes as impressive rock formations towering up to 3,000 metres high, the vertical walls soaring up to the heavens: these are natural wonders in the truest sense of the phrase.

Directions

Ascent: Start from Ranui, southeast of St. Magdalena in Funes (Villnöss) near the valley road (Ranuimüller Hotel, 1,346 m). Walk into the valley for about a half hour, along Trail No. 33, through the forest, until Trail No. 28 branches off to the right (1,439 m; signposted Broglesalm). Take this route, sometimes on an access road and sometimes on the old trail through wooded slopes, up to Brogleshütte (2,045 m; private mountain refuge); 2 hours from Ranui. High Trail: From Brogleshütte, go back on the trail of ascent briefly, and then branch off east (right) onto the Adolf Munkel Weg Trail (signposted No. 35), which runs mostly through beautiful mountain forests. First, you’ll come to Silberquelle (lit: Silver Spring) then branch left towards Gschnagenhardtalm (recommended) and Glatschalm (pretty detour). The high trail sometimes reaches the tree line at the foot of huge scree flows and ends near the forest-encircled Tschantschenon Alpine Farm (no food served) on the access road leading from Ranui to Schlüterhütte; follow this road, and you’ll reach the Gampenalm alpine farm in about 30 minutes of walking up a slight grade (2,062 m; serves food), the endpoint of our high mountain trail; 2.5 hours from Brogleshütte. Descent: from Gampenalm, follow signage for Zans along a wide path, across the meadows towards the west and down to the beautiful Gampenwiese then further down the valley to Tschantschenonbach Stream, which you follow out of the valley to Zanser Alm (1 hour from Gampenalm). Then, on the orographic left side of the valley, follow Trail No. 33 along the access road: the hike is mostly downhill, at no more than a slight grade, and leads through forested slopes out to Ranui; 2.5 hours from Gampenalm.
