Informationen zu Castle Salegg

On 1219 m, at the feet of the mountain Schlern/Sciliar and close to the mountain Santnerspitze, you will find the ruins of castle Salegg in the forest “Hauenstein”. Just like castle Hauenstein, this castle was first mentioned in the 12th century. It was built by the Herren von Saleck in the year 1178. During the centuries, Salegg was used as the “Ganerbenburg” while many different families lived in this complex. 1473, the castle was owned by the family Zwingensteiner and in the 16th century it fell to the family Wolkensteiner.

The castle is deteriorating since the 17th century. Reworking and securing of the old walls only started in 2001. In 2002 the complex was first opened for the public. According to an old tale there is an old tunnel that connects the castles Salegg and Hauenstein. Allegedly, great amounts of gold and silver were hid and since forgotten.  A virgin with long blonde hair watches over this precious treasure.

Only thirty minutes of walking from the ruins of Hauenstein you will encounter the rests of the walls that once formed the castle Salegg in the region of the Seiser Alm/Alpe di Siusi.
