Informationen zu Castel Tirolo

Archeological excavations have recently unconvered, under the chapel of the building, a proto-christian church of the 5th century after Christ and the remains of an antique Carolingian church of the 8th century. Count Tirolo Meinhard II was one of the most important figures of the 13th century and his dynasty gave the region its name, for this reason he is often nicknamed “father of Tyrol”. The castle remained the main residence of this powerful aristocratic family until 1420. The two gates of the castle that go back to the Romanesque period and the Castle chapel are of great socio-cultural importance.

The Castel Tirolo stands out north under the dominating rocca dei masi di Monte Muta. The antique headquarters of the Tyrolean government and now museum of the Culture and history of the Region is also a breathtaking outlook point at 594 m altitude.
