Swiss National Park in the Engadine
The Swiss National Park, the oldest national park in the Alps and Central Europe, is located in the Engadine Dolomites in Graubünden. Founded back in 1914, it has a unique variety of animal and plant species on an area of 170 square kilometers. You can explore them on a network of hiking trails of about 100 kilometers.
The mountain park is located at an altitude of between 1,000 and 3,200 meters - when it comes to hiking, there is a wide choice of easy routes or more challenging ones. Chamois, ibex and marmots can be easily observed in the national park. In addition, there is a lot of information about the Swiss National Park in the National Park Center.
St. Moritz
You will find a change from the untouched nature in St. Moritz: This vacation destination is completely focused on people. In addition to exclusive hotels, you will find casinos and golf courses, among other things. Moreover, St. Moritz has hosted the Winter Olympics twice - even today you will find numerous offers for skiing and snowboarding, cross-country skiing or activities on the lake, which is usually frozen over in winter.
Castles and fortresses
Besides beautiful nature, Graubünden also has numerous historical buildings to offer. Castle Riom, the castle complex Hohen Rätien or castle Haldenstein are just a few destinations for hobby historians. The former border Altfinstermünz is excitingly situated in the Finstermünzschlucht. And Ehrenfels Castle is now used as a youth hostel.
Discover Graubünden by rail
One of the most comfortable methods of travel is undoubtedly the train. And in Graubünden in particular, the train ride is well worth it. In fact, the railroad line through the Albula Valley is considered one of the most beautiful in the world - and has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. For more than 100 years, rails have led over the Bernina Pass and along the steeply sloping Schin Gorge, through dense forest and over viaducts. The 122-kilometer route between Thusis and Tirano blends amazingly well with the wild natural landscape - and offers plenty of opportunities for breathtaking photos from the train carriage.
So an excursion with the Rhaetian Railway, the "Little Red One," is highly recommended in Graubünden. Just hop on and ride directly to the glacier with fabulous views!
