Bike & train. This bike tour from Rio Pusteria to the sports area in Riscone, above Brunico, offers the whole family an emotion-packed day out. It also includes a train ride on the way back!

Directions

The car park at the lock of Rio Pusteria is right next to the Val Pusteria cycling path. Take the cycling path and follow the directions for Vandoies. After 1,2 km, cross the river cycling over the wooden covered bridge and then follow the signposts for the “Brunico/Radweg Bruneck” cycling path. Cycle past the towns of Vandoies and Chienes, then after 14 km, without any particular climbs, you will reach the railway station of Casteldarne. Continue along the cycling path. After roughly 3 km, go up a small hill. Continue to cycle towards Brunico until the “Bierschupfe” bar that is by the Rio Gadera bridge in the industrial area. Leave the cycling path and turn right and cycle past the gravel pit uphill until you reach the Gaderthurn residence that is below the impressive S. Michele Castle. To reach Riscone, continue along the road but don’t follow directions for “Saalen”; at the crossroads keep left. Cycle through meadows near characteristic country houses up a slightly steep hill until you reach S. Stefano. Continue without difficulties following directions for Riscone until you reach the car park of the cableway. At the bus stop, turn left onto a forest road and after 500 m, you will reach a sports area that offers a series of interesting facilities: a playground for children with a slack park and a zoo with deer, Emperor Geese and Dwarf Goats. There is even a horse stable! What more do you want? Return to the bus stop to reach Brunico, turn left, follow directions for Riscone, and go straight on. At Hotel Riscone, turn left on to Via dei Campi, and go straight on until you reach the edge of the woods. Continue on a wide path with a series of bends and then cycle along the secondary roads until you reach the parish church in Brunico. Turn left until you reach the high part of the town. Cycle along the high street for a short distance until you reach on your right the cycling path that runs along the River Rienza. Continue along this path for 4 km downstream towards Rio Pusteria until the station of S. Lorenzo. Here take a 20-minute train journey that will take you back to Rio Pusteria. From the station cycle up to the main road and continue for roughly 80 m and then take the cycling path until you reach once again the lock of Rio Pusteria.

Variante

1. You can start this itinerary at the station of Casteldarne. You can also start from the Market Square in Stegona that is right next to the cycling path that runs along the Rienza River. Cycle through S. Lorenzo and reach the industrial area at Rio Gadera and continue towards Riscone and Brunico where the excursion ends.

2. Ambitious cyclists can renounce to the train ride back: just follow the directions for the “Vandoies/Rio Pusteria” cycling path until you reach the starting point.
