From the South Tyrolean Cycling Track from Vipiteno/Sterzing, passing the Val Pusteria/Pustertal to the main town of Bolzano/Bozen and through the Val d’Adige/Etschtal to Glorenza/Glurns

Directions

The starting point of the South Tyrolan Cycling Track is the city of Vipiteno/Sterzing. The track proceeds through the marvelous town and the “Sterzinger Moos” in southern direction, along fields and woods towards the majestic fortress of Fortezza/Franzensfeste. After passing the fortress turn east on the first road and follow the signposting of the cycling track in direction of the Val Pusteria/Pustertal. The route leads along the river Rienza/Rienz in eastern direction to the city center of Brunico/Bruneck.

The second stage of the South Tyrolean Cycling Track leads through the city of Brunico/Bruneck and along the river Rienza, while passing through the picturesque Val Pusteria/Pustertal. Passing the towns of Chienes/Kiens, San Sigismundo/St. Sigmund, Riomolino/Gais and Vandoies di Sotto/Niedervintl, follow the descent to Chiusa di Rio di Pusteria/Mühlbacher Klause and ascend briefly towards the town of Rio di Pusteria/Mühlbach. Now descend towards the valley until you reach the fortress of Fortezza/Franzensfeste, where you turn left and reach the lake Lago di Varna/Vahrner See. Following the cycling track, you finally reach the city of Bressanone/Brixen, the finishing point of the second stage.

The 3rd stage of the South Tyrolean Cycling Track leads along the cycling track next to the river Isarco/Eisack to the medieval town of Chiusa/Klausen. In the valley you continue your journey until you reach Ponte Gardena/Waidbruck. At the gates of the Val Gardena/Gröden at 627m is located the castle Trostburg. Afterwards the valley starts to become more narrow and the track, leading also through tunnels, passes Campodazzo/Atzwang and Colma/Kolman towards Prato all’Isarco/Blumau, ending shortly afterwards in the main city of Bolzano/Bozen.

Starting point of the 4th stage of the South Tyrolean Cycling Track is the main town of Bolzano/Bozen. The track leads along the river Isarco/Eisack towards the river outfall of the Adige/Etsch. From here the track continues to the left through the Bassa Atesina/Südtiroler Unterland, passing through Laives/Leifers and Ora/Auer and along the mountain “Mitterberg”, from where you reach the lake Lago di Caldaro/Kalterer See. From here, continuing in northern direction towards the towns of Caldaro/Kaltern and Appiano/Eppan, you reach the castle Firmiano/Firmian. Along the river Adige/Etsch the track leads to Vilpian and afterwards through apple trees you cycle in northern direction, passing Sinigo/Sinich, until reaching the spa town of Merano/Meran.

The 5th and last stage leads from Merano/Meran upwards on a steep ascent passing through Lagundo/Algund towards Tel and through the valley Val Venosta/Vinschgau to Naturno/Naturns. Cycling along the river Adige/Etsch you reach Castelbello/Kastelbell and its castle. Passing Laces/Latsch towards Lasa/Laas, famous for its white marble, you reach the Ontaneto di Oris/Eyrser Au and the Ontaneto di Cengles/Tschenglser Au and from here the locality Prato allo Stelvio/Prad am Stilfserjoch and finally the city of Glorenza/Glurns.

You can reach Vipiteno/Sterzing by train or bus. From the train station you take the “Citybus Vipiteno”, which will take you to the valley station of the cable car.

Directions

On the Brennero highway until you reach the exit “Vipiteno/Sterzing”, then follow the main road in direction of the Brennero. The valley station of the cable car is located next to the main road.
