A cable car takes you from Solda – Sulden (1,906 m) to the Rifugio Schaubachhütte-Città di Milano (2,600 m). Follow the green dots of the «Stecknersteig» footpath to reach the Eisseespitze (Punta Lago Gelato, 3,230 m, 2 hours). Descend to the Eissee Pass (3,139 m) and to the Langferner glacier below, and climb up to the Rifugio Casati (3,254 m, 3.30 hours from the cable car). After an overnight stay we have a descent south-west to the Cedèch glacier (approx. 3,000 m) and then we climb again another steep, snowy and slippery slope to the magnificent «lower shoulder» (3,460 m approx.), where the most challenging trek begins. Climbing up the south-western side, 400 m high and with a gradient of between 35 to 50 degrees (moderately difficult on snow and quite difficult on rock or black ice) to reach the «upper shoulder». Hiking along the rocky and snowy southeast ridge and onwards and upwards to reach the cross on the summit (3,859 m, 4–5 hours from the Rifugio). Return via the same route.
A sustained and steep ascent, only suitable for hikers with a good level of fitness and previous rock-climbing experience. Before setting off ensure the weather conditions and the conditions underfoot are good. Between the Lago Gelato Pass and the Rifugio look out for concealed crevasses and falling rocks.
Parking is available at the terminal at the foot of the cable car
