From Vipiteno we cross the entire Ridanna Valley – Ridnaun, to the last car park (1,417 m, Quarry Museum). Route 9 takes you to the Rifugio Vedretta Piana – Grohmannhütte (2,254 m) and to the Rifugio Vedretta Pendente – Teplitzer Hütte (2,586 m, sleeps 50; 3:30 hours from the car park). Route 9 continues on rocks and loose stones (with fixed ropes) passing the moraine and a section of the glacier to reach Becher rock. We will take a left at the intersection (approx. 3,000 m) of the zigzag route and descend among rock and debris. Then cross the glacier keeping an eye out for crevasses. We will climb up to the Rifugio Cima Libera – Müllerhütte (3,145 m, 3 hours from Teplitzer Hütte; sleeps 100). Near Pfaffennieder (3,136 m) we will be climbing up the east side of Wilder Pfaff, among several steep ups and downs. From the first peak (3,458 m, one hour from the refuge) we will descend eastwards to Pfaffensattel (3,344 m). You can either climb the steep snowy and icy slope or the steep rocky terrain on the left (with fixed ropes) up to the top (3,507 m; one hour from Wilder Pfaff). Return via the same route.
Conditions underfoot are generally good, best enjoyed by regular hikers with previous experience of hiking on rocks and ice. Long, strenuous ascent on very steep slopes. The Rifugio Müllerhütte-Cima Libera is under new management; check for changes to opening times.
