In Val Venosta, from Coldrano – Goldrain you will be walking along the entire Val Martello to the last car park (2,050 m, hotels). Route 150 leads to the Rifugio Zufallhütte-Nino Corsi (2,265 m, a good half hour). Take a left at the intersection after the old stone dam and continue on route 103 to the Rifugio Marteller Hütte-Martello (2,610 m; 2 hours from the car park). Walking along the lake, take a left at the intersection and follow route 27 (signposted «Veneziaspitze»), climbing up the moraine and scree bordered by stone figures to Hohenferner (Vedretta Alta). Following the track takes you to the ridge above, and eastwards to the Cima Marmotta (Köllkuppe, 3,330 m; 2:30 hours from the Rifugio Martello). The trail continues along a thin ridge among several ups and downs up to the col (3,300 m), and eastwards among boulders and rocks to reach the Cima Venezia (3,386 m, half an hour from the Cima Marmotta). An easy descent eastwards leads to the central col, then to the Seconda Cima (3,371 m), and Terza Cima (3,356 m). An easy descent among boulders leads to the saddle below (3,300 m approx) and to the glacier, keeping an eye out for crevasses buried under the snow. At the lower edge of the glacier we will follow the stone figures and descend to route 37A. Continue across the moraine and turn right at the intersection, take route 40 which leads to the starting point.
Best enjoyed by hikers with previous experience of hiking on ice up to the Cima Marmotta. The next ridge requires a good head for heights and experience of mountaineering (short 1st and 2nd grade climbs). Keep an eye out for crevasses on glaciers.
